Dr. Sternberg:

Dr. Sternberg is owner of Harlan Veterinary Associates & Referral Center.

He grew up in Shelby, Iowa. Dr. Sternberg completed his undergraduate studies in Animal Science at Iowa State University. Dr. Sternberg also attended Veterinary school at Iowa State University where he graduated in May 1999. He worked nine years at American Animal Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, before becoming a partner with Dr. Eckermann in May 2010. Dr. Sternberg became sole owner on October 1, 2013.

Dr. Sternberg is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, and Iowa Veterinary Medical Association. His veterinary interests include pharmacology, dermatology, and pain management.

Dr. Sternberg is married to Janae, has two sons, Kyle and Luke. The Sternberg’s are also proud owners of Kobe – Yorkshire Terrier mix. Some of his hobbies include watching his kids activities, and spending time with his family.

Ann Monahan – Veterinary Technician

Ann Monahan earned her Veterinary Technician degree from Iowa Western Community College in 2010. She and her husband, Justin are the proud parents of Maggie – their fabulous rescued pomeranian. Being a lifelong resident of Shelby County, Ann brings local knowledge and familiarity to the clinic. Assisting with surgeries of all kinds is one of Ann’s favorite duties. Joining our team in 2006 as an after school help, Ann quickly because a vital part of our team. Sports are a big part of Ann and Justin’s life. Their favorite teams are the Dallas Cowboys and ISU Cyclones. She also enjoys fishing, crafts, and spending time with family.

Susie Schwery – Office Manager

A native of Shelby County, Susie graduated from Harlan Community High School. She continued her education at Northwest Missouri State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science with Equine and Bovine Specialties.

A well-known presence at Harlan Veterinary Associates since 1992. Susie and her husband, Denny, share their home with their dog, Pony, and feline friend Duncan. In her spare time, she gardens and quilts.

Emily Tornblom – Groomer

Emily grew up in Hancock, Iowa and graduated from AHST in 1993. She graduated from Golden Paws grooming school in Houston, Texas in 2004.

Emily lives in Shelby and has 3 dogs, Armani, Bentley and Indy. She also has 3 cats, Martini, Jose and Ewevie. She enjoys doing anything outdoors and spending time with her family.

Allyssa Obrecht – Kennel Assistant

Allyssa Obrecht has grown up in Harlan, Iowa and will be graduating from Harlan Community High School in May of 2019. After high school, she plans to attend Iowa State University to receive a degree in Animal Science and then attend Veterinary school.

Allyssa has been apart of our team since 2016 and enjoys working with animals. She spends much of her time showing cattle and goats across the country. She is also very involved in 4-H and FFA. Allyssa has a dog, Thor and a rescue cat, Loki. She enjoys showing livestock, camping, traveling, and spending time with family.

Lucy Borkowski – Kennel Assistant

Lucy Borkowski is a high school student at Harlan Community High School and an animal lover! She started her employment here in 2018 and works mornings in the summer as well as weekends throughout the school year. Lucy is an active student, participating in FFA, 4-H, Student Council, NHS, HOSA, Cross Country, Soccer, LYO, and Best Buddies. She enjoys working with the dogs since she is the proud owner of the family Australian Shepherd: Cowboy.

Aletha Hoepner – Kennel Assistant

Aletha graduated from AHSTW High School in 2017. She is currently attending Iowa Western Community College to become a veterinary technician.

In her free time she likes to go shopping, and spending time with family and friends.

Ashley Martin – Veterinary Assistant

Ashley Martin joined HVA in October 2018. A lifelong animal lover, she has quite the assortment of pets, horses, ferrets, dogs, cat, chickens, and birds. Ashley and her husband have 2 daughters, and have hosted many foreign exchange students. In her spare time she enjoys working out, spending time with her family, and of course with her animals.

Emma Jorgensen – Kennel Assistant:

Emma Jorgensen has been with HVA since December 2018. She will be a member of the graduating class of 2019 from AHSTW. She will be pursuing a BSN at the University of Iowa this fall. While Emma enjoys sports the most, she also looks forward to the variety of duties she partakes in at the clinic.
